Getting the message across

First-generation British, with a degree in translation studies, Shula spent 13 years from the mid-70s working in translation agencies primarily commissioning and editing the work of freelancers and liaising with clients. She was also involved in organising pre-print work with old-technology typesetters, calligraphers, and graphic artists. For a short while in the days of The Source she ran a business with a computer journalist experimenting with file-transfer, took a short spell off in personnel management and ran a software localisation team in Ireland before finally leaving in-house management for cottage freelance life in Wales as a hands-on into English translator and consultant to fledgling agencies.

After a number of years combining translation with B2B market research interviewing, the pull of Europe became irresistible and in 1992 France won the toss of a coin to be the next host. The following year Parlance was born to drive home the message that the business is a multi-sided, English language-based communications-driven affair. Out of hours Shula winds down practising Tai Chi, Qi Kong, hiking and singing jazz.
